First Lutheran Church History

  • 1925: First English Lutheran Church was the first English speaking Lutheran church in Marshall.
  • 1925 – 1941: First English Lutheran Church was located on the corner of Fifth and Main Streets.
  • 1942: The first services were held on January 11th at the newly built church on the corner of Church and A Street.
  • 1947: Sunday morning radio broadcast services began.
  • 1948: A Mortgage Burning Service was held on January 11—6 years after the church was built.
  • 1954: An extensive building project involving the Education Wing began.
  • 1962: The church purchased the 150 ft x 150 ft property on Church Street.
  • 1966: A new Reuter pipe organ was dedicated in February—the cost of the new organ was $25,000.
  • 1972: The congregation voted to change the name to First Lutheran Church.
  • 1975: A monthly contemporary worship service started.
  • 1976: Congregation members participated as liturgists in the worship services.
  • 1981-82: The church entered into a major building and renovation project focused on the Education/Fellowship Hall.
  • 1984: Groundbreaking was held for the new church addition, which consisted of 6 classrooms, improved entrance, elevator, Friendship Chapel, Conference Room/Library and the Youth Room in the basement.
  • 1985: The First Lutheran Church Foundation was established.
  • 1987: The Saturday evening worship service began.
  • 1992: A Praise Service was held once a month at 8:30am.
  • 1996: The congregation voted to expand First Lutheran Church with a $2 million addition (new sanctuary, fellowship hall, offices and classrooms).
  • 1999: Faith Chest Ministry began.
  • 2000: 75th Anniversary Celebration
  • 2003: New Sanctuary Addition Dedicated
  • 2011: TLC Wednesday Ministries started.
  • 2012: Enhanced Milestone Ministry began.
